Yes--underground hip-hop is particularly politically savvy. I am a fan of Gabriel Teodros, Mystic, the Narcyssist, Khingz, and a number of other groups. Unfortunately, mainstream hip-hop has been co-opted by a stereotype-generating corporate machine that favors the gangsta-pimp-ho holy trinity (shout out to Professor Tricia Rose).

Yet another reason to emphasize the local, the real, the struggles that take place within real spaces and create real places from which we can make a stand against imperialism. Thanks for the blog spot, profe!

I agree but want to simply add a story of a group of people not convinced by "superficial explanations." I spent the past two days at the Hip Hop Teach In sponsored by Words, Beats, Life, Inc., a grassroots cultural organization. The young, young adults, mid-aged and elder population in attendance celebrate peace and a commitment to the human family, critique imperialism and the wars on the Middle East and at home. Through their arts and their community building they develop a highly sophisticated analysis of global capitalism, American exceptionalism, imperialism, etc. Hip hop is anti-authoritarian in its outlook and the teach-in expressed this. A rainbow of humans used music, dance, literature and voice to argue for a better world.

Sometimes a name says it all. If people of color could be 'just a guy,' that would be nice but racial profiling and discrimination make it a difficult for the rest of us to be 'just a guy.' As stated above, the act of raising peaceful children in centered on the passing on of a long history and tradition to them. Sadly that most valuable possession is being almost universally lost in our urbanized cultures. Time is spent doing the thousand other consumer-centered activities with little focus on family history and tradition. What is most valuable is being lost.

Observing this ongoing tragedy, a 10-year time-capsule and class reunion/mentoring project was started at one Dallas inner city middle school in 2005. It starts with a letter from parents to their child entering middle school. It is a letter about their dreams for their child. The student then uses that letter to write a letter to themselves about their history and their plans for the future. These letters are placed into a 500-pound vault bolted to the floor in the school lobby and passed by all students many times a day: the School Archive. The goal is to help students know that by building on the strengths of their history the can make positive goals for the future.

Before they leave for high school the letters are rewritten focusing 10-years into the future. This time they are placed by the students into the vault where they will stay for 10-years. They know that at their 10-year 8th grade class reunion they will be asked to speak with then current students about their recommendations for success. They are warned to prepare for questions like "What would you do differently if you were 13 again?"

Our graduation rates are setting new records every year now, and 7 Dallas schools now have these 500-pound gun vaults turned into instruments of peace, and bolted to the floors in their school lobby.

Piedra de luna you make some very important observations and I agree that one of the most difficult things will be to get "the majority of people who benefit from migrant labor" to at least accept and support,if not organize comprehensive immigration reform. I have argued elsewhere, in the NACCS Statement on SB1070, that we also need a grassroots "Marshall Plan" to rebuild rural Mexico so displaced indigenous farmers recuperate their food sovereignty and political autonomy. As a person who regularly crosses the border (and yes, I have worked abroad without a visa), I have to wonder why the U.S. remains so staunchly against the idea of accepting visitors. After all, the U.S. is a nation of immigrants; less than 2% of the population of the United States is indigenous, and yet the white governors and representatives of the U.S. clamor over each other to block the indigenous and mestizo migrant workers from coming to the U.S. to take the jobs that anglos won't. We've all eaten the fruits (and vegetables, etc.) of migrant labor, but I don't see the majority of people who benefit from migrant labor jumping at the opportunity to organize a wide scale immigration reform that would more accurately reflect the economic demand for migrant labor and guarantee fair wages to the workers. Instead, the U.S. sticks to the idea that if you want to visit, you'd better be either European (most European citizens get a nod from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol) or well off, because we don't want to risk people liking the place and staying here. That's paraphrasing, but that's what the rules say. And if we're going to shove "Free" Trade down other countries' throats so that U.S.-based multinational firms can operate in their territory with impunity, should we allow the people who aren't corporations the same freedom of movement?

Much of what you reference in your blog posting -- censorship of you, attacks on your patriotism, questions about Tom Horne's service record, questions of whether the latest stats on border security fairly reflect the quality of life issues being experienced by those on the border, and so on -- were well outside the scope of our story. For the purposes of our one minute 30 second TV report, we did focus on the "occupied" issue because that is what your political opponents are focusing on. Four years ago, when i visited the AZ State Museum, they had an excellent display on the so-called Gadsen Purchase. The USA appointed a mexican dictator, made the deal, he stole the money, and mexico got rid of him again. NO ONE paid or even asked the Tohono O'odham who have been in southern AZ forever. Rudy, I am so sorry I missed you while you were in Arizona. We were friends many years ago, while I was still an undergrad in Tucson.

Thank you for continuing to educate and enlighten, while providing an academic foundation for the perspective of natives (not nativists) who have a genetic history on this continent for tens of thousands of years.

I am a college teacher now, although I am prohibited from saying where I work because I openly support the DREAM Act. We were discussing you at graduation. We need you now more than ever. Please do everything you can to help passage of the desperately needed DREAM Act, this month. We need to protect our national treasures.

If previous economic and war time crisis have taught us anything, it is that governments and NGO's take action against those whom they perceive to be part of the problem.

I agree that now provides an opportunity for social and radical groups to get their voice heard and harm the neoliberal movement, but I think that circumstances will need to get much worse for change to become possible.

At the same time, with the conditions for conflict rising, the possibility of things getting pretty ugly becomes possible. Institutions and organizations that exist due to Capitalism and Neoliberalism are threatened, and during times of crises, any dissent directed towards them could be meet with stronger-than-usual resistance.

In regards to mexican immigration, I think that mexican migrant workers will probably end up get more exploited, due to the mainstream portrayal of immigration as part of the economic crisis.
